They Were There For The Demonstration, But This Time It Wasn’t For The Sign (This isn’t Harvard, You Know)

This photo taken in the Boston Common in 1973 by Edmund L. Mitchell shows three people watching an unknown demonstration taking place. Behind them is an exterior Fallout Shelter sign, likely pointing to the shelter within Park Street MBTA Station, which is one of many downtown subway stations that were once designated as Fallout Shelters.

When public shelters began being identified and marked in the early 1960’s, many protests against them took place in the United States, including at Harvard University, where signs were actually torn down multiple times.

This sign no longer exists, but was likely taken down with time and not in protest.
