This 1954 photo from Burlington Retro was submitted by contributor Robert Fahey, with the question of where Route 628 was. The “628” sign under the sign for Route 62 has a Civil Defense logo, which were placed on evacuation routes.
Fallout Five Zero reached out to our contributor Brian, who has an extensive knowledge of our roads and highways, and his reply was:
“The Civil Defense Routes were evacuation routes out of cities and towns. They were randomly assigned to major routes; e.g. Route 501 was used for route 1A for the then-Callahan tunnel. 628 could have connected Burlington to Lowell or further north”
It is unknown when the route signs with the CD logos were removed.
