Currently living in the old Hebrew school at 122 elm hill ave. I had no idea.
Every public school would have been included. I imagine parochial schools would as well. We went down to the basement of the Agassiz school in Jamaica Plain on Brewer st.
Although city civil defense records indicate shelter space was allotted in each school for students, not every public school was designated as a public shelter. For example, the Henry Grew School in Hyde Park was built in the late 1950’s, right before the shelter program started, but was not designated as a public shelter because it lacked the proper space (minimum capacity for a shelter was 50). Many (but not all) parochial schools were shelters also, and the ones that weren’t were likely not due to lack of space or improper construction type.
1610 Massachusetts Ave
Sign on exterior of building on mass ave side.
Unknown status.
Hello and thank you for your submission. This sign is in Cambridge, and we plan to compile and list shelters from there in the future. I will save this location for that list
Are there shelters in Metro West MA/Concord?
Although I could not find locations in Concord that were once shelters, or still had signs, Lexington had 38 designated shelters as of 1968. This includes several schools, the post office, and the police station, which is on Massachusetts Ave and still has a sign on the side of the building as of a few months ago. A NE Telephone Building (now Verizon) on Waltham Street in Lexington also had a sign on it until 2019,
It’s important to note that these locations, even if they still have a sign on them, were once recognized as shelters but are not any longer by FEMA or any government agency. Although the program never officially ended and was even referenced on a government website as recently as 2003, many of the locations have either been demolished, renovated, or repurposed.
I think Temple B’nai Moshe address is off by 20
Hi Paul,
Thanks for the correction; the address is 1845 and not 1875.
With the current state of shelters, wouldn’t it make more sense to just stay home?
Currently, the US does not recognize any building as a designated shelter. This list shows where shelters once were and where the signs remain at those former shelters. The remaining shelter areas have signs that were not removed as there was no official end of the public shelter program. Though a formerly designated shelter may offer protection from fallout, they have also not been inspected or maintained by the government. Using a former shelter in the event of fallout intrusion to our area would be a personal decision.
Why not maintain these shelters for the public, in case the unthinkable occurs, then remove almost all the signs? Since 2016, the top 1% have been buying up multi-million dollar luxury condo’s in former nuclear silo’s and building luxury underground cities in Europe, in preparation for a nuclear war. The Reagan era movie “The Day After” (WWIII with Russia) shows a museum with the painting “Le Discret” (1798 painting with a Man with his index finger over lips). The same expression can be seen be used in the World Gold Council (not to be confused with the Nuclear GOLD codes) commercial “Navigate the Unforeseeable”. https://www.ispot.tv/ad/qxcD/world-gold-council-navigate-the-unforeseeable Also the pre-pandemic movie “The Man in the High Castle” is full of “parallels” of things to come, which actually occurred during/after the pandemic. The series shows D.C. nuked due to a failure of leadership. The U.S. is at DEFCON 3 and international military commands are at DEFCON 2 (same as Cuban Missile Crisis). Never underestimate Evil. https://www.defconlevel.com/
Hi John,
Thank you for your insight. It appears based on documents from the Office of Civil Defense and later the Defense Civil Preparedness Agency that the creation and then subsequent failure to maintain the shelters came down to money. A lot of people, including President Kennedy and Nelson Rockefeller were passionate about the civil defense program, but in a short few years after the program started funding was diminished and then non-existent. The signs and rations remained for many years before being forgotten about and subsequently thrown out, and the signs taken down. Here in the US there are people interested in survival who build and maintain their own bunkers or shelters, but I feel that the advent of MAD has made it so we won’t see public shelters here ever again (whether right or wrong is subject to opinion).
